Micromanaging

Now, attention to detail is important. You cannot have a quality outcome without attention to detail.

But, micromanaging is another story. This is probably one of the top pet peeves people have of their manager. How do you know if you do this?

1. You are constantly meeting with your people. I once had someone working for me, and I noticed every time I walked by her office, her whole team was in there. It’s one thing to provide guidance, it’s another thing for your team to lack independence.

2. Your people feel they need to check in with you all the time because you need to sign off on every decision.

3. You are copied on every email (same reason as above).

Here’s the problem with micromanaging – it kills motivation and independent thinking because your team thinks you don’t trust them. If you’re micromanaging, step back. Let your team run with it. They might surprise you.
