Confession: I’m not good at this. Yes, I know you’re supposed to think about all the things you’re grateful for, but this always just seemed like a waste of time.
But it is Thanksgiving week, so here’s my list:
- I am grateful to have the freedom to make choices in my life as a result of being frugal, pushing myself, investing in my education, and having the right people in my life who supported me no matter what.
- I am grateful that even though my dad has Parkinson’s, and it’s progressing fast, I still have the warm feeling I always do when I hear my dad’s voice on the phone. Even if I am explaining again that he’s not moving to Florida (he’s already there).
- I am grateful that even without a job, people still value my opinion and seek counsel.
- I am grateful that I can use my problem solving abilities for more than just work: e.g. dealing with insurance companies (OMG, what’s with the donut and prescription drug plans?).
- I am grateful that I am in a position to help others.
What I know now that I didn’t know a year ago:
- How hard it is to deal with mental illness, regardless of age or type. We are so woefully ill-equipped to deal with this issue.
- How much stress can impact you and in weird ways: anxiety attacks, tight necks, mood swings….all new. (Well, maybe not the mood swings).
- That even when you’re an adult, talking to your mother transports you right back to your adolescent rebellion time when everything she said drove you crazy.
Wishing all of you a moment for gratefulness.
