When I was working at a large bank, I had a manager who said to me:
“When it comes to breakfast, the hen is involved, but the pig is committed.”
Now, I know he wasn’t telling me that I had to sacrifice my life for work, but I got his point.
One of the things that separates the “great” from the “fantastic, next to be promoted, future CEO” group is commitment. How committed you are to the job, company, people, and task at hand. Here’s the funny thing about commitment: it’s incredibly transparent. I can sometimes tell within 2 minutes if someone is committed or not. Language: “Hmm, I don’t think so”, body posture: casual, lounging, work: “It’s good enough”, drive: “It’s 5. Outta here!”
This is a personal choice. But if you want to be on the promotion track, if you want to be CEO someday, be the pig.
