Slow Down

People are always in a rush. We’re running from one meeting to another, dealing with unexpected demands, trying to get things done. But doing things in a hurry can backfire on you. Here are some indications that you need to slow down:

1. You are re-sending out emails because you sent out the wrong version. Stop. Check. It takes 10 seconds to review the file, and you didn’t telegraph to 30 people on the email that you make a mistake. Do this enough, people will start ignoring your email and waiting for the “real” one to come out. Yes, we notice.

2. You’re asking questions when it’s clear you haven’t read your emails. This is like coming into the middle of a movie that everyone’s watching and asking “What did I miss?” Stay current.

3. You change direction constantly of the original ask. This probably drives people more crazy than anything else. If you’re going to ask your team to do something, take the time to really size out the assignment. Refinements are ok. Starting over isn’t.

I once heard a great saying: “Spend 5 mins now to save 50 hours later.” So true.
